I know that I said before that the writing that I least read was essays, but I think that I may be wrong. I think it is poetry. I can honestly say I have not read much poetry since graduating college. And I am honestly asking myself why.
In prep for this day, I read a couple of websites about engaging poetry more, and they had all these wonderful little quips to encourage reading. One was: realize that poetry is all around us. Okay. The subject matter is all around us, and if I take the time, I do see attempts at poetry all around me. But it isn’t good poetry, and if I am being completely honest, most of it is horrible poetry.
So for the remainder of the year, I am once a week going to seek out the masters of poetry — from Shakespeare all the way to Amanda Gorman, who read her poem “The Hill We Climb” at his inauguration. I am going to try to find and develop an appreciation for poetry. That is my new goal. I will have to let you know how it goes.
