As a reader, I read a 100 to 150 books a year. I finish ever book I pick up. I don’t really live by the mantra “So many books, so little time.” I feel as of now I have the time and energy to not give up on a book even if it is bad. There have been plenty over the years that I thought about quitting, but I consider a “bad read” research.

I research what works and what doesn’t, and I take notes. I am quickly learning from others what mistakes I don’t want to make when I pen my own novel. Some of my more critical reading friends do discuss what “bad reads” we have encounter. These are often fun meetings with an adult beverage. These are just as useful as a normal book club meeting because you can learn a lot. Most of the time I avoid those “bad reads”. But at times I have checked a few out to see if I agree with them.

One thing my research has taught me is we all have different tastes when it comes to novels. My mother tolerates no violence in her books. One friend likes a good ending — everything must be neatly tied up at the end. Another hates paranormal romance. I hate the cozy mystery, especially if they contain horrible character names (Stout Fella — I am not joking that was the name of a character. Please buy me a good baby name book, if I start this nonsense).

I think it is natural for critical readers to dream about writing their own bestsellers. I certain think about it, and I believe the time will come sooner than later.
