This day is for celebrating the skilled, quick-witted, and problem solving women in the world. These women know exactly what they want from life and will not settle until they get it. Even on the roughest of days they appear to have it all together. They are never mean, but they don’t have time for bullshit.

As a women, I am always impressed by these women, and I aspire to be one. As a mother, I am left wondering are these women born or raised to be this way. The whole nature vs. nurture question. And I think they could be raised. They just have to exposed to the right literature containing strong and smart women.

Starting early in developing a smart and sexy women, one would have to be exposed to literature containing precocious girls. I am thinking of characters such as Madeline, Matilda, and Romana Quimbly. These series all feature smart children, who are not afraid or embarrassed to demonstrate their intelligence.

As they reach those awkward pre-teen years, they should be reading Harry Potter for Hermione Granger. She is the perfect nerd. She studies constantly. She even asked to use a time turner so she could take more classes. Another great series would be Nancy Drew. More characters that are not afraid of being smart.

In high school, they should be reading books like Little Women and Pride and Prejudice to teach young ladies to never settle until they get what they want. At least they will have a couple examples of girls playing the long game and not looking for instant gratification.

With these strong female characters, how could we raise anything but smart and sexy girls ready to take on the world?
