The ancient Greeks first mention the creation of restraint device in mythology. Proteus, a shape-shifting god, was the first to have the cuffs slapped on him to keep him from changing. However, like all practical inventions, handcuffs have evolved over time. New designs have been introduced, changing the function of the cuffs and the material they are made from. I understand each police officer has his favorite pair.
If you want to read a book with handcuffs in action, I recommend the following:
Kate Alice Marshall’s No One Can Know

Emma discovers she is pregnant on the day she and Nathan lose their apartment, they lose the money they put down on a new house, and Nathan loses his job. Facing potential homelessness, Emma finally confesses that she jointly owns a house with her estranged sisters — the house her parents were murdered in.
By being forced back home, Emma has to confront the past she has been running from. Most of the town suspect Emma murdered her parents after they disapproved of a relationship, but Emma didn’t kill anyone. The only thing Emma is guilt of is covering for her sisters by developing a story that they all stick to.
When the case goes cold, Emma and her sisters are separated. Juliette (JJ) goes off to college while Emma and Daphne are put in different foster care homes. Each keep their secrets about the night because they believe that they are protecting each other. However their secrets are keeping them in danger because the real killer continues to lurk closer than expected.
Once all the sisters get into the same room and share the information they have kept hidden for 14 years, they know that the killer is still in Arden Hills, and it is up to them to bring him to justice.
Full of twists and turns, this book will keep you up all night.
